The South Bay is known for it being one of the most culturally, economically and ethnically diverse areas in the the US.  It includes a lot of different races, such as: European, Asian/Pacific Islander, Africa, and Latino ancestry.  There is also a variety of different types of income and classes in the area as well.  The Middle and Upperclass can be found in El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrence.  Palos Verdes Peninsula and Manhattan Beach are two of the wealthiest communities in the entire United States.  These areas also are known for their expensive real estate.  Gardena is known as one of the oldest Japanese communities.  Carson city has a large population of middle class African Americans.  Hawthorn, Inglewood and Gardena are diverse communities for quite a few Latinos and African Americans.

Toyota and Honda, Japanese automobile manufacturers, maintain their headquarters in South Bay for North America.  Up until late 2005, Nissan was also headquartered there.    Why is South Bay used for such headquarters?  They’re close to vehicle import operations at the nearby ports, and it gives them proximity to the automobile customization culture that is prominent in nearby South LA.

The South Bay is traditionally home of the Southern California’s aerospace industry.  Employing thousands in high-skill, high-wage engineering positions and generating enormous amounts of tax revenue.  The Los Angeles Air Force Base sees quite a bit of aerospace research activity, as well as Hughes Aircraft, DirecTV, and Raytheon’s Space and Airborne Systems.

The upper level of schooling in the area is seen in California State University-Dominguez Hills, El Camino College, Westwood College and Los Angeles Harbor College.
